Swearing in New U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo – Under Secretary Nicholas Burns performed the swearing in November 15 for P. Robert Fannin, the new
Ambassador of the United States of America in the Dominican Republic.
The ceremony took place in the State Department of
the United States in Washington, D.C.
Ambassador Fannin was confirmed on October 26 by
the United States Senate as the new U.S. Ambassador in the Dominican
Republic. He replaces Hans H. Hertell. Dr. Flavio Dario Espinal, the
Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in the United States, and Mary
Peters, the United States Secretary of Transportation, also
participated.
During the swearing in, Ambassador Fannin made a
brief statement on the new position he is assuming. With regard to the
bilateral relations between the two countries, Ambassador Fannin said:
“...We face the challenges of the world together.
Forty-one persons of Dominican descent lost their lives on September 11,
2001. Many persons of Dominican descent serve in our armed forces. We
share a determination to fight narcotics trafficking.
Only three weeks ago when tropical storm Noel
devastated parts of the Dominican Republic, the United States was there
to help with millions of dollars of supplies and other assistance.
Our cooperation covers many areas: education, health care, housing,
economic freedom, human rights, good governance, and democracy. In all
these areas, there are many ways we can work together. |
