Ask the Consul
If my U.S. passport is lost or stolen, what should I do?
If your passport was lost or stolen, first report it to the police. This applies to both stolen AND lost passports, whether current or expired. You should clearly describe to the police the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of your passport. You will need a copy of the police report when you apply for a new passport.
Immediately after reporting it to the police, you must report your lost or stolen passport to the U.S. Embassy. Please send an email with your name, date of birth, the approximate year of issuance, and your passport number, if available to: ACSsantodom@state.gov.
To replace your passport, you must make an appointment for interview at the consular section. Make the appointment online at santodomingo.usembassy.gov/passports-e.html. If you have to travel urgently, follow the instructions on the passport webpage for an emergency appointment. Remember to follow the website instructions very carefully, or you may risk delaying the issuance of your new passport.
On the day of your interview for a new passport, bring a copy of the police report, identity documents, such as driver's license or cedula, your completed passport application (DS-11) available on the website, two 2x2 inch color photographs, proof of your need to travel if an emergency appointment was granted, and payment for the new passport. The schedule of passport fees is also on the website.
All passports that are reported lost or stolen are canceled electronically. If you find your passport after reporting it lost or stolen and travel with it to the United States, you may be detained at the Port of Entry. You must turn in a found passport to the consular section of the U.S. Embassy, where it will be formally cancelled but returned to you.
