Ask the Consul
How do I contact the U.S. Embassy in an emergency?
The American Citizen Services Unit at the U.S. Embassy is here to help U.S. citizens. We provide many services, including after-hours emergency services, but before calling outside of normal business hours, it is first important to understand which situations are considered emergencies and which are not.
If you have news regarding the death of an American, a serious accident involving an American, or you know of an American who has become the victim of a violent crime such as rape, assault, or a kidnapping, immediately report this to the U.S. Embassy duty officer by calling (809) 221-2171. The duty officer is available and prepared to handle such emergencies on weekends, holidays, and anytime between closing and opening of business during the week.
Except for the above circumstances, most situations are not considered emergencies, and can often wait until the next business day to address. Please keep in mind that we cannot replace a U.S. passport outside of normal business hours. If your U.S. passport has been lost or stolen, you will have to call for an appointment. Please call (809) 731-4468 between 1 and 3:30 p.m. (Monday through Thursday). Likewise, if you have questions regarding immigrant or non-immigrant visas, please contact the Visa Information Center at 200-3232 on the next business day, or visit our website for more information.
