Visa Applicants: The 2008 U.S. Tax Stimulus Payment
Under the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 passed by the U.S.
Congress , more than 130 million households will receive economic stimulus
payments beginning in May. Both American citizens and Legal Permanent Residents
qualify, but the only way to get one is to file a federal tax return for 2007.
What if I don’t normally file a tax return?
Many people who receive Social Security or Veterans
benefits do not normally file an income tax return. But if your 2007 benefits
were over $3,000 in 2007, you can qualify for the tax stimulus payment by filing
the special FORM 1040A. For people filing joint tax return, the total
qualifying income for both spouses is $3,000.
How much will stimulus payments be?
The basic amount of payment is based on your tax liability,
with a minimum of $300 for a single person and $600 for a married couple filing
jointly. The maximum payment is $600 for a single person and $1200 for a couple
filing jointly. In addition, eligible taxpayers who qualify for a payment may
receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child under age 17. To qualify,
your child must have a social security number.
How will IRS pay me?
These checks will be separate from any tax refund that may
be due to you. Payments will be mailed to the address on your 2007 tax return.
If you fill out the direct deposit line on your tax return, the payment will be
made by direct deposit to your bank account.
What about residents of Puerto Rico or US Virgin Islands?
Special rules in the law apply to US territories, and tax
authorities in each possession will make stimulus payments to eligible
residents.
Where can I get more information?
Tax forms and additional information are available online
