Ask the Consul

I received the appointment letter for my K1 fiancé visa today.  My friend who had an appointment last week mentioned that I now need an additional form called the DS-157.  What is this form and are there any changes or other documents that I should be aware of?

If you are a male applying for a K1 (fiancé), or a K3 (spouse awaiting an IR1) visa, and you are between the ages of 16 and 45, in addition to the DS-156, you will now need to complete an additional form, the new DS-157. Applicants who come to their interview without form DS-157 will be required to complete it prior to interviewing with an officer.  Please follow the link here (http://foia.state.gov/FORMS/visa/ds0157.pdf) to locate and complete this short form.

Because K1 and K3 visas are essentially non-immigrant visas, all K visa applicants must pay the standard $131 USD fee at Banco Popular for the visa interview.  In addition, all applicants 18 years or older are also required to pay a $13 USD administrative fee at Banco Popular.  You must bring your receipts to the interview.

All K visa applicants will still need to complete the DS-156 non-immigrant visa application form. But this form must now be completed electronically and then printed to be brought to the interview.  Please follow this link (http://evisaforms.state.gov) to find and complete the on-line form.  Beginning July 1, the Consular Section will only accept DS-156 forms completed electronically.  This on-line version of the standard form is faster and easier to complete and will help avoid errors in your application that may lead to delays in the processing of your case.
